A: A common cause of tachometer fluctuation is a dirty or malfunctioning Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. A poor connection in the RPM signal wire means missed voltage spikes which can cause the needle to bounce around below the actual RPM reading. When examining the tachometer, look for corrosion, broken wires, or loose connections between the coil terminal and the tachometer.
A: Pushing RPMs so that the tachometer measures into the red zone (called “redlining”) can lead serious engine damage. A high rpm can damage your transmission over time, even if it is extremely low or high loads. High rpm also wears the bearings and oil seals, which results in faster fluid breakdown.
