Q. How long have you been at MurCal?
A. Technically, I've been with MurCal for 39 and a half years. However, I spent many more years as a kid running around the halls and making devices to play with from nuts, bolts, resistors, diodes, and capacitors. We'd pretend they were walkie-talkies and radios...
Q. What is your position/role at MurCal?
A. I'm the President of MurCal which means that I am the chief complaint manager. Thankfully, we have a great team so there aren't many complaints that need to be managed.
Q. What do you love most about your job and why?
A. MurCal is a pretty unique company. We get to play in several markets that include agriculture, energy production, municipal water pumping, off highway, and marine. I love that one day I can be standing on a farm where they grow custom sunflowers and the next day, I can be in an engine distributor's shop helping them with a custom harness and display solution. I get great satisfaction when we can solve a problem for a customer that allows them to focus on their core competency. It is a win for them and a win for us.
Q. How would you describe your job to a bunch of kindergarteners?
A. I help people solve complex problems by answering the phone when they call and responding to their emails.
Q. Tell us a little about yourself:
A. I have a friend that calls me "Do-It-All Bob". I have lots of hobbies and I am a person that cannot sit still. I love cycling, both mountain biking and road cycling. Photography is a passion that I picked up when I was in my 40s. During the winter, I really enjoy skiing with my grown children. I am also a private pilot and recently became current again. Flying to see customers is now another reason I love coming to work. I also love volunteering with my wife at UCLA and cheering on the Bruins football and basketball teams.
Q. Three words which best describe you:
A. Adventurous, Curious, Trusting.
Q. Your most memorable/rewarding MurCal experience?
A. I can't narrow this down to just one memory. I get the most rewarding feeling when I'm at a customer site, we've provided customized controls, and it all works as designed. That's an awesome feeling. Getting a "thumbs up" from the customers and seeing them smile is a feeling that is hard to beat.
Q. Fun fact about you?
A. I met my future wife the very first day of school at San Diego State University. We were both 17 when we met. We were engaged during our Senior year and got married right after we graduated. Go Aztecs!
Q. What place in the world would you like to visit?
A. Ireland. I've been in the vicinity but never to Ireland.
Q. What is the coolest place you have ever visited?
A. Crater Lake in Oregon. It is just stunning.
Q. What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
A. Actively listen to others and always be a learner.
Q. Do you have any hidden talents?
A. I played the trumpet in my middle school Jazz Band.
Q. Do you have any hobbies?
A. Too many to list!
Q. Do you have any pets?
A. As empty nesters, it's nice not to have any pets. We had dogs, cats, gerbils, and goldfish when the kids were growing up.
Q. Favorite Movies?
A. I'd say my all-time favorite movie is "The Jerk" with Steve Martin. I actually had it memorized at one time. Another movie with lots of great one-liners is "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." My kids love quoting lines from this movie. I'm also a big fan of "The Nightmare Before Christmas."
Q. Favorite TV shows?
A. I remember liking WKRP in Cincinnati, Cheers, and Friends. These days, my wife and I enjoy watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Bosch, and other Prime/Netflix shows.
Q. Favorite Artist/Music?
A. I'm an 80's kid. My favorite bands are Depeche Mode and Oingo Boingo.
Q. Favorite Food?
A. Italian dishes that my wife or mother-in-law make using their homemade sauce.
Q. Who Inspires You?
A. I'm inspired by my friends, my family, my customers, and my collegues. Being with people that push you to explore your limits is the best way to get better each day.
Q. Which celebrity would you like to meet?
A. In high school, playing soccer was my life, there were two players that I would have loved to meet. Pelé and Johan Cruyff. They both made the game look so beautiful and easy.
