Q. How long have you been at MurCal?

A. I began working after the company was established by my Father – Art C Murphy – in 1958. This wasn’t a formal job (I was 13 years old). My father had me checking the operation of some simple controllers we were building for the Oil and Ag business. He said he wanted to see if they were, “idiot proof.” Was that a compliment?

Q. What is your position/role at MurCal?

A. I’m MurCal’s Director. I am currently training our engineering staff in how we apply controls for municipalities. “Murphy” control systems have been automating pumps – engine and electric motor driven – for counties and districts since my father found a need to fill at the beginning of our company.

Q. What do you love most about your job and why?

A. The new engineering staff is very challenged by applications. They’re learning how to apply their “school knowledge” to the real world. It’s exciting to teach them from my experiences.

Q. How would you describe your job to a bunch of kindergarteners?

A. Automation.

Q. Tell us a little about yourself:

A. I’m a 1944 model. Like my uncle Pat once said, “there aren’t a lot of spare parts for that year (his year was 1910).” My training is nearly all “on the job.” Some college, but mainly trained by pump operators, consulting engineers, engine mechanics, etc. And my father who inspired me to learn.

Q. Your most memorable/rewarding MurCal experience?

A. As with anyone who designs a control system, it’s very rewarding to see the design work as required by the municipality operators.

Q. Fun fact about you?

A. This seldom – no, never – comes up because it’s not interesting to anyone: I was captain of the wrestling team in high school.

Q. What place in the world would you like to visit?

A. Tuscany.

Q. What is the coolest place you have ever visited?

A. The Acropolis.

Q. What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

A. Stand up straight (didn’t follow until too late) and floss (eventually followed).

Q. Do you have any hidden talents?

A. If I do, it’s hidden from me.

Q. Do you have any hobbies?

A. Bike riding. 🚴

Q. Do you have any pets?

A. No. No pets.

Q. Favorite Movies?

A. Mostly old movies, 30’s and 40’s. Proper grammar, no politics, generally wholesome, etc.

Q. Favorite TV shows?

A. I liked Seinfeld.

Q. Favorite Artist/Music?

A. Gershwin.

Q. Favorite Food?

A. Mexican 🇲🇽

Q. Which celebrity would you like to meet?

A. Charles Krauthammer before he died. Now, Henry Kissinger.
