Why is the IPC/WHMA-620 the next big move for MurCal?

The IPC/WHMA-620 standard has become essential for the cable and wire harness industry, providing precise and reliable guidelines from design through manufacturing. It outlines critical processes, including the quality and types of materials used, ensuring the consistent quality of manufactured products.

What does Murcal have to do to get certified?

To become IPC Certified, our team members will receive hands-on training, MurCal will have a certified instructor on staff to help with this process, then the team members will take the test to earn their certification.

What makes this certification important?

Obtaining IPC/WHMA-A-620 certification fosters productive cooperation between OEMs and electronics producers, as it is a global standard that enhances quality and compliance, ensures customer satisfaction, and validates a manufacturer's credibility.

This leads to increased reliability of the products for both current and potential clients. At MurCal, one of our core values is to consistently provide the highest quality in our products, as evidenced by the positive feedback from our clients.

Here’s a few more specific reasons:

1. Quality Assurance

Consistency: The IPC/WHMA-620 certification ensures that all cable and wire harness assemblies meet consistent and rigorous quality standards. This reduces variability in production and helps maintain high-quality outputs.

Reliability: Products manufactured to IPC/WHMA-620 standards are more reliable, reducing the risk of failures in critical applications.

2. Industry Recognition

Credibility: Holding this certification enhances the credibility and reputation of MurCal within the electronics manufacturing industry.

Compliance: Many customers and partners require compliance with IPC/WHMA-620 standards, making certification a crucial factor for securing contracts and business relationships.

3. Improved Skills and Knowledge

Expertise: Certification training provides in-depth knowledge of best practices, techniques, and standards in cable and wire harness assembly, enhancing the skills of technicians and engineers.

Up-to-Date Practices: The training ensures that our team is updated with the latest industry standards and technologies.

4. Operational Efficiency

Reduced Errors: Proper training and certification help in reducing manufacturing errors and defects, leading to more efficient production processes.

Cost Savings: Fewer defects and reworks translate to significant cost savings over time.

5. Customer Confidence

Trust: Customers are more likely to trust and choose MurCal for demonstrating a commitment to quality through industry-standard certifications.

Satisfaction: MurCal is better equipped to meet customer specifications and requirements, leading to higher customer satisfaction and retention.

6. Competitive Advantage

Differentiation: Certification can be a key differentiator in a competitive market, highlighting MurCal's commitment to excellence and industry standards.

Market Access: It can open doors to new markets and opportunities, particularly where compliance with IPC/WHMA-620 is a prerequisite.

7. Regulatory Compliance

Adherence to Standards: Certification helps MurCal adhere to national and international regulatory requirements.

What is the IPC/WHMA-A-620 Standard?

The IPC/WHMA-A-620 Standard Revision E remains the only industry-consensus standard for Requirements and Acceptance of Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies. IPC and the Wiring Harness Manufacturer’s Association (WHMA) continue to work together to develop this significant update.

The standard describes materials, methods, tests and acceptability criteria for producing crimped, mechanically secured and soldered interconnections, and the related assembly activities (corresponding lacing/restraining criteria) associated with cable and harness assemblies. Any method that produces an assembly conforming to the acceptability requirements described in this standard may be used.

The IPC/WHMA-A-620 standard sets expectations between WHMA members and their customers for what is considered acceptable quality workmanship for cables and harnesses. It was created as a joint project of the Association Connecting Electronics Industries (IPC) and the Wire and Harness Manufacturers Association (WHMA). Since its creation and subsequent release in 2002, the A-620 has become the industry’s yardstick of quality for cable and wire harness products.

The main purpose of this standard is to enable qualified candidates to develop accurate skills of determining acceptable and unacceptable wire harness assemblies according to the A-620 standard.

Persons who undergo and successfully pass the IPC 620 training are expected to obtain these skills:

*Use the quality standards of IPC/WHMA-A-620 to determine which cable or wire harness products are acceptable or rejects.

*Interpret and share the objectives of the IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards

*The ability to explain terminologies and definitions related to cable and wire harness manufacturing and quality standards

Successful participants of the IPC/WHMA-A-620 CIT training and certification program will be awarded with certificates and recognized as Certified IPC Trainers. This gives them the qualification and authority to train and certify operators and quality inspectors in the cable and wire harness manufacturing.
