In the industrial equipment sector, various tools are available for monitoring and controlling engines and machinery. This article compares three such products: the Enovation Controls PV101, the new S35, and the Governors America Corp JDR100. While the PV101 is being phased out and replaced by the S35, some stock of the PV101 remains available. All three are tools that display live engine parameters such as RPM, oil pressure, coolant temperature, fuel level, battery voltage, and engine run hours. They also show J1939 stop, warning, malfunction, and protection status messages.

Product Overviews

Enovation Controls PV101: The PV101 is a multifunction display that allows operators to view standard engine and transmission parameters, as well as active and stored trouble codes. It is available in two main models: the PV101-C (78700439), which works with engines rated Tier 3 and under, and the PV101-C (78700615), which supports Tier 4 engines. The PV101 offers features like multiple language options, sender input, five service reminders, and selectable CAN bus data rates. It is plug-and-play but requires configuration for specific engine applications.

Enovation Controls S35: The S35 is designed to succeed the PV101. It features a rugged, compact design with a color LCD and tactile buttons, making it suitable for outdoor use. The S35 supports CAN J1939, CAN Open, and RS485 serial communication, allowing for integration into various applications. It includes configurable software for customizing parameters, color schemes, and company logos, and supports multiple languages and data logging.

Governors America Corp JDR100: The JDR100 is designed for universal compatibility with electronic engines and devices equipped with J1939 compatible Electronic Control Units (ECUs). The JDR100 is a cost-effective option, particularly for those who don't need all the features of a modern display like the S35, and it can serve as a drop-in replacement for the PV101 in most applications that don't require Diesel Tier 4 or newer emissions information.

Comparison

Durability: The JDR100 has an IP67 front and IP69K rear resistance, making it suitable for harsh environments and extreme temperatures (-40 to 185°F or -40 to 85°C). The S35 is also rugged, with IP67-rated protection, resistance to vibrations, and an operating range of -40°C to +85°C. The PV101 is rated at IP68.

Specific Strengths:

PV101: Best for basic engine monitoring, especially for those needing compatibility with older systems. It provides a range of features but lacks the modern customization of the S35.

S35: Ideal for those requiring a modern, customizable display with multiple communication protocols. It is versatile and integrates well into various industrial settings.

JDR100: A basic, cost-effective replacement for the PV101. It is rugged but does not have the advanced features of the S35.

Use Cases

PV101: Often used in construction equipment, agricultural machinery, and older industrial vehicles where basic engine monitoring is needed. This was the industry standard.

S35: Ideal for modern industrial applications like heavy machinery, generators, and vehicles where customization and advanced monitoring are required. Usable in harsh environments like mining or construction sites.

JDR100: Commonly used in fleet management for trucks, buses, and other vehicles for quick engine diagnostics. Also useful in industrial settings where real-time engine parameter monitoring is important for efficiency and preventing downtime.

Conclusion

Each product serves specific purposes. The PV101, while being phased out, has been an industry standard for basic J1939 displays, and now there are two replacement options. The S35 is designed for modern needs with its customizable and adaptable features. The JDR100 is a basic, cost-effective replacement that suits Tier 3 and older engine needs. The choice depends on the requirements, whether it’s basic monitoring, advanced features, or modern system integration, and the budget.
