First, a bit of History
Herb Kaewert, an M.I.T. graduate, founded Stored Energy Systems® (SENS) in 1971. He located the company in the heart of Silicon Valley, amidst a vibrant high technology culture. Kaewert had previously founded Alkaline Batteries Corporation (ALCAD). He grew ALCAD to be one of the leading suppliers of NiCd batteries in the U.S., ultimately selling the company to the Chloride Group (U.K.).
Based on his years of experience with industrial batteries, Kaewert recognized the inherent sensitivity of batteries to temperature, shelf life, overcharging, and undercharging. Through better charger technology, he believed he could increase the life and reliability of batteries.
His conviction proved to be correct. Numerous customers experienced radical increases in battery life (as much as 10x in harsh environments) and found that their total costs and risk of battery failure went down significantly. The company grew based on this principle and built an impressive list of customers including Bechtel, Pennsylvania Power & Light, Exxon Mobil, El Paso Energy and AT&T.
In 1991, to accommodate needs for expansion, Herb and his son Bill moved the company to its current location in Longmont, Colorado. There, Bill took over day-to-day operations of the company. Since 1991, the company has expanded more than ten fold. To help lead this growth, Herb’s son Doug joined the company in 2006. Under the leadership of the Kaewert brothers, SENS has continued to innovate in product development along the principles Herb established early on.
Leading Supplier & Market Leader
SENS is now the market leader and leading supplier of high reliability DC power supplies / chargers and of the standby and emergency generators. SENS meticulous design and quality control delivers charger reliability as close to “bulletproof” as is technically possible. For SENS users these dual reliability advantages mean lowest risk of costly downtime. It is a major and rapidly growing supplier to the utility, oil & gas, and process control markets. Key customers include General Electric, Caterpillar, numerous electric utilities, and manufacturers in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
SENS lead times are the fastest in the industry, even though every product is built to customer order. Quality and reliability are extremely high, with some models demonstrating 1 million hours mean time between failures (MTBF).
SuperTorque 8Z Genset Starting System
The SuperTorque 8Z from SENS is a revolutionary technological advancement for genset starting systems that increases the safety, reliability, and sustainability of emergency and standby power systems.
Developed in partnership with ZincFive, the SuperTorque 8Z Engine Starting System employs a nickel-zinc battery bank integrated with a dedicated battery charger, communications, controls, and user-interface — all packaged in a single integrated solution that has the footprint of a single 8D battery.
Generators are essential for mission-critical backup applications. The SuperTorque 8Z is an Innovative plug-and-play generator starter solution that has a drop-in replacement option for existing field installations and new OEM generators. ZincFive’s safe and power-dense nickel-zinc battery offers unparalleled power delivery, a smaller footprint, higher reliability, lower cost, and significant sustainability advantages compared to other battery chemistries. NiZn is very stable and long-lived. Unless lead-acid starting batteries on gensets are replaced every one to three years, they fail suddenly, without warning. Even if replaced this often, they sometimes explode. For this reason, the SuperTorque 8Z is also the sustainable choice.

A single SuperTorque 8Z provides comparable engine starting performance as (4) lead-acid 8D batteries and their dedicated charger. A single factory-packaged and tested 8Z replaces a system of four batteries, charger, and ten field-connected wires.

Keep your Connections Rugged and Water Tight with Trombetta’s CAN Splitters!
Here at MurCal we solder, crimp, and insulate our in-house wire harnesses together. That is great in the shop but how about in the field, in the real world? We want to keep our connections rugged and water tight. Trombetta has a solution. We can easily crimp some Deutsch pins and connectors for a CANbus extension leg. Once those are installed, we can mount and install one of our rugged CANbus splitters or other comparable products.
